京大入試の問題は自然な英文の尺度には使えない。

オレが受けた時、問題文の“her names“の引っ掛けを見て、「オイオイ何やってんだよ京大」と思ったわ。おかげで受かったけど。

shallのレジスター（使用域）を一切気にせずに
普通に使われる助動詞として例文をいっぱい載せている暗唱例文集があったら、そういう例文集は使うべきではない

実際shall例文どんなのが載ってんのか？と思ってネットで拾ったがダメだこりゃ

なお全くの余談ですが、私が初めてShallという言葉を聞いたのは映画のロード・オブ・ザ・リングの第１部です。モリアの坑道でガンダルフがバルログに対して、"You Shall Not Pass!!"と言い放ち、身を挺して仲間を守ります。

これを現代英語で普通の表現として使ったらおかしい

shallという使用域のせまい現代的な表現としては変な英語を、学生に大量に暗唱させてるのがおかしいんだよ

結論から言うと、332（提案）以外の shall は、現代英語ではかなり古風か限定的です。文法的には正しいものも多いですが、普通の会話や現代的な文章ではほとんどが will / going to / can に置き換えられます。

ただし完全に消えたわけではなく、フォーマル・文語・強い約束といった特定の場面では今も使われます。ひとつずつ丁寧に見ます。

① I am afraid that I shall not be free till the examination is over.
→ 現代ではやや古風です。特にアメリカ英語では不自然に感じられます。
自然な言い方は I won’t be free until the exam is over. です。
この shall は単なる未来を表していますが、現代ではその役割はほぼ will に置き換わっています。

② You shall hear more from me by the next mail.
→ かなりフォーマルな手紙調なら成立しますが、普通は使いません。
現代では You’ll hear from me again soon. や I’ll write again soon. が自然です。
ここでの shall は「約束・保証」のニュアンスを少し帯びていますが、やはり古風です。

③ The mother has told him that he is too young to understand the reason, but shall hear it when he is older.
→ 現代では不自然です。
自然なのは he will hear it when he is older. です。
このタイプの shall（単なる未来・予定）は、現代英語ではほぼ完全に will に置き換わっています。

④ I do hope I shall be able to enter this school this time and enjoy a happy school life.
→ イギリス英語のフォーマルな書き言葉なら成立しますが、日常ではほぼ使いません。
現代では I hope I’ll be able to enter this school this time. が自然です。
ここでは「控えめな願望としての未来」ですが、これも will に吸収されています。

⑤ I shall buy this house on condition that you sell it to me a little cheaper.
→ 意志・決意を表す shall で、古風ではあるものの意味は通じます。
現代では I’ll buy this house if you sell it to me a little cheaper. が普通です。
昔は I shall（単純未来）と I will（意志）を区別する説明がありましたが、現代ではその区別はほぼ崩れています。

⑥ You shall want for nothing as long as I live.
→ これは今でも成立します。ただし日常会話ではなく、誓い・荘重な約束・文学的表現です。
意味は「私が生きている限り、あなたに不自由はさせない」です。
ここでの shall は強い保証・約束を表しており、この用法は現代でも生きています。

そもそも、700選って言うのは大学受験用なわけだよね

大学試験の問題がどんなだったか正直はっきりしないけど、古い作品を元に出したりしないのかな

古い作品が問題に出てくりなら古い時代の表現を勉強しておくのも悪くないんじゃないの

誰と勘違いしてるか知らないけど、この人ものすごく頭悪いな

京大入試に古い英語が出題されてshallが使われていた

そのことでは

21世紀の現代の学生が暗唱する例文集にまるでshallが普通に使われる表現であるかのように頻回登場する

という不適切さは覆らず、とうてい正当化などできないのだが




そんな簡単なこともわからないとは

普通に使われる表現であるかのように

それなら、学生が古い作品に出てくる表現だと理解しながら使えばいいだけでは

shallはなんだろ？→古い表現なんだ、なるほどー、古い作品の問題が出た時に慌てなくてすみそうだな

って事でいいんじゃないの

ドラクエの英語版をやると英語の古い言い回しがガンガン出てくる
（ドラクエは元々の日本語が古風だから）
こんな感じのやつ

Thou shalt journey to the south and defeat the Lord of Shadows.
（そなたは南へと旅立ち、影の王を打ち倒すべし。）

自然な英語： You shall journey to the south and defeat the Lord of Shadows.
（厳かな予言ニュアンスを残す場合）

日常会話： You must go south and defeat the Lord of Shadows.
（ざっくばらん調、中世の雰囲気は台無し、FF寄りになる）
